Tiverton Town Football Club, nicknamed “The Tivvy,” is a non-league football club based in Tiverton, Devon.
Established in 1913, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Premier South, which is part of the seventh tier of English football. The team calls Ian Moorcroft Stadium their home ground.
Tiverton Town Football Club was founded in the summer of 1913, initially as Tiverton Athletic, following the demise of a local rugby club. The club’s early years saw them transition from playing local leagues to achieving their first major success by winning the East Devon League after merging with Uffculme St. Peters in the early 1920s. Despite interruptions due to wars, the club, known for a time as Tiverton AFC before adopting the Tiverton Town name, began to establish a foundation for future success, highlighted by the acquisition of significant local talent and the first of many league titles.
The post-war era brought significant changes, including a move to the current ground at Ladysmead, but success was initially limited with the club experiencing relegation battles in the late 1940s. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Tiverton regained form, winning consecutive league championships and establishing a pattern of local dominance that would characterize much of the following decades. The club’s ambitious move to the Western League in the early 1970s marked the beginning of a period of adjustment, which eventually led to a remarkable era of success from the late 1980s through the 1990s, including multiple league titles and FA Vase victories.
Tiverton’s journey through the early 21st century was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, featuring promotions to the Southern League Premier Division and significant cup runs, juxtaposed with struggles against relegation and managerial changes. The club’s resilience was evident in their ability to bounce back from setbacks, including a relegation scare and the eventual return to the Southern League’s top division. Despite recent challenges, Tiverton Town FC has maintained a proud tradition, with legendary players and managers contributing to its rich history and continuing to aim for success both on and off the pitch.
