The Glassboys

Stourbridge Football Club, nicknamed “The Glassboys,” is a non-league football club based in Stourbridge, West Midlands.

Established in 1876, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Premier Central, which is part of the seventh tier of English football. The team calls War Memorial Athletic Ground their home ground.

Founded in 1876 as Stourbridge Standard and achieving their first major success in the 1887-88 season by winning the Kidderminster Cup and Worcester Charity Cup. By then, the club had changed its name to Stourbridge Football Club and joined the Birmingham and District League, winning the Worcestershire Senior Cup three times. The 1923-24 season was particularly successful, with Stourbridge winning the Birmingham League championship and another Worcestershire Senior Cup.

After World War II, Stourbridge, named for the town’s cut glass industry, won the Birmingham Combination Championship in 1952, along with several other regional cups. They returned to the Birmingham League in 1954, winning the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1958-59 and achieving a double cup win in 1967-68. The club joined the Southern League in 1971 and, under manager Alan Grundy, won the Division 1 (North) title and the Merit Cup in the 1973-74 season. That same season, they made an impressive run in the Welsh Cup, defeating Swansea and Wrexham before losing to Cardiff City in the final.

In the following decades, Stourbridge experienced fluctuating fortunes, including relegation in 1987-88 and a Midland Division Championship win in 1991. Despite some management changes and financial challenges, the club enjoyed notable cup runs and league successes in the early 2000s. Under Gary Hackett’s management from 2005, they achieved promotions and significant FA Cup runs, reaching the 3rd Round Proper in 2016-17. After Hackett’s departure in 2019, Ian Long led the team until his dismissal in 2020. Stuart Pierpoint and Leon Broadhurst took over in 2021, leading the team to a respectable league finish and strong cup performances.
