The Town

Melksham Town Football Club, nicknamed “The Town,” is a non-league football club based in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Established in 1876, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Division One South, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Oakfield Stadium their home ground.

A founding member of the Wiltshire League in 1894, the club won their first Division One championship in the 1903–04 season and secured the Wiltshire Senior Cup the following year. The club was briefly renamed Melksham & Avon United in 1920 due to their ground’s ownership by Avon Rubber but reverted to their original name in 1926. During this period, they achieved runner-up positions in the league multiple times and, in 1951, adopted their current name. Subsequent years saw further successes, including finishing as Division One runners-up in 1959–60 and 1971–72, and winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup again in 1969–70.

The club joined the Western League in 1974, but after a poor finish in 1975–76, they were demoted to Division One. They bounced back by winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup in 1977–78 and Division One in 1979–80, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Their Premier Division tenure included winning the Wiltshire Premier Shield several times. Despite relegation in 1987–88, they quickly regained their status, winning the Wiltshire League’s Premier Division and the Senior Knock-Out Cup in 1993–94. Success continued with promotions and cup wins throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, including being crowned Division One champions in 1996–97 and winning multiple Wiltshire Premier Shields and Senior Cups.

Melksham’s home ground history includes moving from Challymead Common to the Old Bear Field in 1883 and then to the Conigre in 1920. The Conigre, part of the Melksham House estate, saw numerous upgrades over the decades, including the installation of floodlights in 1986 and a new metal stand in 1994. In 2017, the club relocated to Oakfields, a modern facility shared with Melksham Rugby Club. The first match at Oakfields, an FA Vase game against Bristol Manor Farm, was played on January 14, 2017, in front of 1,215 spectators.
