Thame United Football Club, nicknamed “The Red Kites,” is a non-league football club based in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Established in 1883, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Division One Central, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Meadow View Park their home ground.
One of the oldest football clubs in Oxfordshire. Initially competing in various local leagues, they achieved significant success by winning the Oxfordshire Senior Cup multiple times and securing the Senior League titles in the early 20th century. Their switch to the Hellenic League brought more triumphs, including league titles in 1961-62 and 1969-70. After a period of decline in the mid-1980s, Thame joined the South Midlands League in 1988-89, eventually winning the title in 1990-91, which led to their promotion to the Diadora League.
In the mid-1990s, Thame United experienced a resurgence, winning the Diadora League Division 2 Championship in 1994-95 and achieving notable runs in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Despite a relegation in 1997, the club bounced back under the management of Andy Sinnott and later Mark West. The early 2000s saw Thame reaching the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time and moving to the Southern League, Division 1 West. However, financial difficulties in 2005 led to eviction from their Windmill Road ground. A subsequent agreement secured funds for a new facility at Church Farm, and the club shared grounds with Aylesbury United and AFC Wallingford during this period.
Thame United’s fortunes improved with the completion of their new Meadow View Park ground in 2010. The club celebrated the official opening with a record crowd and boasted one of the best sporting facilities in the county. In 2016-17, they won the Hellenic League Premier Division, leading to promotion to the Southern Football League East Division. After a stable few seasons, the club faced challenges due to the pandemic but managed to finish respectably in subsequent seasons. The 2022-23 season ended with a successful run in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and a change in management, with Ben Williams taking over for the 2023-24 season.
