The Bricks

Hadley Football Club, nicknamed “The Bricks,” is a non-league football club based in Barnet, Barnet.

Established in 1880, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Division One Central, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Barnet Gate their home ground.

The club initially garnered attention by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. During the 1880s and 1890s, the club drew large crowds to Hadley Common, but by the turn of the century, players began moving to more prominent clubs like Barnet FC. The club’s activities waned around 1912, with intermittent fortunes until World War II, after which notable player Lester Finch emerged. Post-war, Hadley joined the Barnet and District League and later moved through various leagues, playing at Wrotham Park and Barnet Playing Fields. The club saw success in the Mid Herts League, winning the Premier Division in 1975/76 and 1976/77, before moving to several different grounds due to facility requirements.

In 1992, Hadley moved to Brickfield Lane in Arkley, Barnet, and rejoined the Herts Senior County League in 1999/00. Under Ian Gray, the club won the Division One championship in 2001/02 and the Premier Division in 2003/04 and 2004/05. After several managerial changes and a blocked application to join the Spartan South Midlands League, the club eventually joined the West Herts Saturday League, achieving multiple league victories in the 2007/08 season. They finally joined the Spartan South Midlands League in 2008/09, gaining promotion and winning the Division Two Cup. Subsequent seasons saw further promotions, an entry into the FA Vase, and their first FA Cup appearance in 2010/11.

Returning to Brickfield Lane in 2016/17 after significant ground improvements, Hadley had notable FA Cup and league performances. Under Anthony Clark, the club finished third in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division in 2018/19. In 2019, Hadley was moved to the Essex Senior League, achieving their best FA Cup run but facing disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021/22 season was the most successful in the club’s history, with an FA Cup run, a final in the Herts Senior Cup, and promotion to Step 4 of the National League System. They finished 9th in their first season in the Southern Football League Division One Central and look forward to the 2023/24 season at Step 4.
