Coventry Sphinx Football Club, nicknamed “The Sphinx,” is a non-league football club based in Coventry, West Midlands.
Established in 1946, they currently compete in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Division One Midlands, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Sphinx Drive their home ground.
Established in 1946 as Armstrong Siddeley Motors Football Club, the club initially served as a works team for Armstrong Siddeley. It was renamed Sphinx Football Club in 1960. As a founding member of the Coventry Alliance, the club competed in the league until 1993, when they moved up to Division Two of the Midland Combination. They finished fourth in their debut season, securing promotion to Division One. In the 1994–95 season, Sphinx finished as runners-up in Division One and were promoted to the Premier Division, adopting the name Coventry Sphinx.
Coventry Sphinx quickly found success in the Premier Division, finishing as runners-up in 1995–96 and again in 2001–02, a season that also saw them win the league’s Challenge Cup. The club continued their strong performances by finishing as runners-up in both the 2004–05 and 2005–06 seasons, winning the Challenge Cup again in 2005. Their efforts culminated in winning the Premier Division title in 2006–07, earning promotion to the Midland Alliance. In 2009–10, Coventry Sphinx added to their accolades by winning the Midland Alliance League Cup with a 3–1 victory over Westfields.
Following the merger of the Midland Alliance with the Midland Combination in 2014, Coventry Sphinx joined the newly formed Midland League’s Premier Division. The club was transferred to the Premier Division South of the United Counties League at the end of the 2020–21 season. They achieved further success by becoming the Premier Division South champions in the 2022–23 season, which led to their promotion to Division One Midlands of the Northern Premier League.
