Sheffield Football Club, nicknamed “The Club,” is a non-league football club based in Dronfield, Derbyshire.
Established on 24th October, 1857, they currently compete in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Division One East, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Coach and Horses Ground their home ground.
Sheffield Football Club has a long and nomadic history, with its first matches played at East Bank, on the east side of the River Sheaf. Players would change at Park House, where the club’s initial rules were drafted. Founding member Nathaniel Creswick later recalled their first game in 1857, played in Thomas Turner’s field at East Bank.
Over the years, the club’s venues included Bramall Lane, Newhall, Ecclesall Road, and the Old Forge ground in Attercliffe, before settling temporarily at Ecclesall Road in the late 19th century. Around the turn of the century, matches were held at Owlerton and the Niagara Grounds in Wadsley Bridge.
After World War I, the club moved to Abbeydale Park, where they remained for over six decades. Issues with dressing room facilities led to brief stints at Hillsborough Park and the Don Valley Stadium, though the latter proved unsuitable due to its vast capacity and low attendance figures. In 2001, the club finally secured a permanent home at the Coach & Horses Ground in Dronfield, previously used by Norton Woodseats.
Their tenure began with a goalless draw against Thackley, followed by an official opening match against Manchester United. The club marked this new era with on-field successes, including promotion to the Northern Premier League in 2007 and several local cup victories.
