The Yellas

Ascot United Football Club, nicknamed “The Yellas,” is a non-league football club based in Ascot, Berkshire.

Established in 1965, they currently compete in the Pitching In Isthmian League South Central Division, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Ascot Racecourse their home ground.

Ascot United’s origins date back to 1928, with various teams forming and reforming before a men’s team was firmly established in 1965. Initially playing at Sunninghill, they later secured permission to convert land near Ascot Racecourse into a football pitch, where the club remains to this day. Over the years, the club won numerous trophies, and a wooden clubhouse was built at the site. By the late 1980s, there was a surge in demand for youth football, leading to the introduction of small-sided games and the establishment of The East Berks Youth League by then-chairman Keith Wickes in 1992, laying the groundwork for the modern club.

The 1990s and early 2000s saw significant infrastructure and organizational growth. A new clubhouse, pitches, and a training area were developed, and a partnership with Charters School introduced floodlit astro-turf training facilities. In 2004, Ascot United became one of the first clubs to receive FA Charter Community Club status, with 43 teams, including girls, veterans, and men’s teams. The first team gained promotion to the Hellenic League in 2006, and by 2010, expanded facilities were unveiled at the Racecourse Ground with support from the Football Foundation. The club’s profile grew with events like hosting their first FA Cup match in 2011, which was also the first game streamed live on Facebook, drawing a record crowd of 1,150.

Recent years have seen remarkable growth in both performance and community engagement. The men’s team secured promotion to Step 4 in 2023 after winning the Combined Counties League Premier Division North and claimed the FA Vase at Wembley. The women’s section flourished, winning the SRWFL Cup and achieving league promotions, while the girls’ section expanded with over 50 weekly participants and county cup victories. The club also launched a disability team, the Warriors, supported by Ascot Racecourse, and appointed Donna Graham to lead women and girls’ football. With over 70 junior teams and continued investment in facilities and development, Ascot United has become a hub for football in the community.
