The Motormen

Redbridge Football Club, nicknamed “The Motormen,” is a non-league football club based in Barkingside, Redbridge.

Established in 1959, they currently compete in the Pitching In Isthmian League North Division, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Oakside their home ground.

Redbridge FC, formerly known as Ford United, has a history intertwined with the car industry in East London and Essex, originating from the merger of Ford Sports F.C. (Dagenham) and Briggs Sports F.C. in 1958 or 1959. Both clubs date back to 1934 and had their own successes in various leagues before the merger. After facing financial difficulties in the mid-1990s, the club was rescued through sponsorship and renamed Redbridge FC in 2004 to establish a stronger local identity and to become the highest-placed club in the London Borough of Redbridge. Despite ambitious efforts, including reaching the Nationwide Conference South, the club faced relegations and management changes over the years.

The club has played at multiple grounds, transitioning from the Ford Sports & Social Club in Rush Green to Oakside Stadium in Barkingside, due to lease issues and the need for better facilities. Throughout its history, Redbridge FC and its predecessor entities have competed in various leagues and experienced notable successes, including league championships and cup victories. However, they also faced challenges, such as relegation and financial instability, requiring frequent managerial changes and strategic shifts to improve fortunes.

Redbridge FC has participated in national and county cups, achieving milestones like reaching the FA Cup first round and securing titles in the Essex Senior Cup and London Senior Cup. The club has also developed talent, with notable players moving on to professional ranks and contributing significantly to football beyond the non-league scene. Despite fluctuating fortunes on the field, Redbridge FC remains a pivotal part of its community, striving for success and contributing to the local football landscape.
