York City Football Club, nicknamed “The Minstermen,” is a non-league football club based in York, North Yorkshire.
Established in 1922, they currently compete in the Vanarama National League, which is part of the fifth tier of English football. The team calls York Community Stadium their home ground.
York City Football Club, founded in 1922, initially competed in the Midland League before joining the Football League in 1929. They were part of the Northern Section until 1958, and then transitioned to the Fourth Division. Over the next few decades, the club experienced several promotions and relegations, with notable achievements including reaching the Second Division (now Championship) in 1974, and becoming Fourth Division champions in 1984 with a historic 101 points.
The club has a reputation as ‘giantkillers’ in cup competitions, achieving remarkable victories against top-tier teams. Memorable moments include reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 1955 and defeating Arsenal in 1985. Additionally, they shocked Manchester United in the 1995 League Cup with a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford.
However, York City faced challenges, culminating in their relegation to the Conference in 2004, ending a 75-year stint in the Football League. They returned to the Football League in 2012 but were relegated to the National League in 2016 and further down to regional non-league football in 2017. Despite these setbacks, the club secured promotion back to national football in its centenary year, demonstrating resilience and a fighting spirit.
