Swindon Supermarine Football Club, nicknamed “The Marine,” is a non-league football club based in Swindon, Wiltshire.
Established in 1992, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Premier South, which is part of the seventh tier of English football. The team calls Hunts Copse their home ground.
Formed from the merger of Swindon Athletic and Supermarine, both of whom were struggling at the time, the new club took Swindon Athletic’s place in the Hellenic Premier Division. Swindon Athletic, previously known as Penhill, had enjoyed significant success in the Wiltshire leagues, while Supermarine, originally Vickers Armstrong, had its roots in the Supermarine aircraft company’s works club. After their amalgamation, Swindon Supermarine consistently performed well in the Hellenic Premier Division, securing several cup finals and achieving significant league successes by the late 1990s.
The club’s fortunes fluctuated over the years. In the 1997/98 season, Swindon Supermarine won the Hellenic Premier Division Championship but faced managerial upheavals and inconsistent league performances thereafter. Notable successes included winning the Norman Matthews Floodlight Cup and the Wiltshire Premier Shield in the 1999/2000 season, and again in 2000/01, when they secured the Hellenic Premier Division championship. In 2001, after ground improvements, the club was promoted to the Southern League. Despite facing relegation battles, changes in management, and financial strains, the club continued to compete, achieving stability and moderate success, including a remarkable FA Cup run in the 2010/11 season.
In recent years, Swindon Supermarine experienced managerial changes and fluctuating league positions. The 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons saw them reaching the playoffs but facing setbacks. The 2014/15 season marked a downturn due to injuries, leading to a mid-table finish. However, they rebounded in 2015/16 with a strong league campaign and cup victories. After a managerial shift in 2017/18, the team won promotion back to the Southern League Premier Division. Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019/20 and 2020/21, the club achieved its highest ever position in the 2022/23 season. The 2023/24 season began poorly, but a new management team led by Stuart Fleetwood managed to secure the club’s place in the Southern League Premier South.
